NYC braces for snow flurries and frigid temps

Winter is officially more than a month away, but New Yorkers may be in for a rude awakening this week with wind chills that could bring temperatures into the single digits. New York City issued a snow alert for Tuesday with the National Weather Service predicting light morning rain that could transition into snow around noon. For those clinging to the remnants of fall, now is likely the time to admit defeat and break out the scarves and gloves.

Only a mere tenth of an inch of snow is possible for the Big Apple, but the Sanitation Department’s commissioner, Kathryn Garcia, told reporters Monday that the city is taking the forecasted flurry seriously after a November storm caught the city off guard, snarling commutes across the five boroughs.

“There are really significant transitions that can happen in weather. It can go from very innocuous to significant,” Garcia said Monday. In preparation for the dusting, the city will have a team of 4,300 people, 725 salt spreaders, and 318,000 tons of salt at the ready. The city’s fleet of 1,600 snow plows will hit the streets if more than two inches accumulates.
